Young Guns 3

Quiksilver rounds up the latest batch of team surfers for this promotional video. Presumably following the formula of Young Guns 1 and YG2 (haven’t seen them, so I couldn’t tell you) Quik packs the young reps off to locations like G-Land, West Oz and Whale Beach to show off the latest moves in waves ranging from junky beachbreak to rifling reef passes.

The video features surfers Dane Reynolds, Clay Marzo, Jeremy Flores, Julian Wilson, Garret Parkes and Mr. Quik, longstanding team rider Kelly Slater. The surfing is impressive, but gets a bit boring after a few minutes. It’s hard to tell one surfer from another let alone whether they riding in Florida or Fiji.

But that’s not the point of this type of video: the goal is to move product.

If you’re a huge fan of  Marzo, Reynolds, Slater et al, this video provides good opportunity to study their moves. Or, if you work in the sports apparel industry, this video is a great example of state-of-the-art marketing. For the rest of us, however, YG3 is just another catalog to toss in the recycling bin.
