Life in the Food Chain

The Honolulu Advertiser reported Tuesday that Scott Henrich was resting comfortably after being bitten by a shark at Kalama Bowls.

The 54-year-old surfer was out for the dawn patrol at the popular Maui break about 300 yards from shore when the attack occurred.

The shark clamped onto the surfer’s leg. “I thought, ‘I gotta get him off my leg,’ so I pounded him,” Henrich said, “I was just hoping he wasn’t going to chomp all the way through.” Henrich punched the fish until it let go.

Henrich managed to get shore and hobbled 350 yards to a roadway, where he flagged down a motorist who called 911.

Resting at home after receiving over 100 stitches from the thigh to ankle of his right leg, Henrich was sanguine about the attack. “You are out in the food chain, and I was the first one out there, and it was just my turn,” he said.
