Surfer's Almanac: Central America and Mexico

Mexico: So close, so cheap and such good waves -- it's no wonder a lot of gringos go south of the border and decide to stay. The Pacific Coast of Mexico sees the best surf. The Pacific Coast is really two coasts -- Baha and the Mainland.

  • Baha -- North of Punta Abreojios, midway down the peninsula, the biggest waves come between October and May. In February at Todos Santos, near Ensenada, swells from arctic storms can top 20 feet. Water temps are cool in the north of Baha, generally around 60F. The southern end of the peninsula sees its best surf from June to October when hurricane swell can drive waves far up into the Sea of Cortez. Water temps are warmer in the south too. At Cabo San Lucas on the southern tip you can trunk it all year long.

  • Mainland Mexico -- You can find surf all the way from the Guatemalan border right up to Mazatlan, where Baha begins to block the open ocean swell. Peak season is June through October, but waves can be had all year. Best of all you don't really need wetsuit surfing Mainland Mexico. Although a shortie might help keep the chill off on the coolest winter days. For the full report see the Mexico story in the Archive.

Nicaragua gets good surf much of the year. Waves are best between February and October.

Panama's Pacific coast gets swell from June through November. The Caribbean side of the isthmus goes off from December to April.

The Caribbean generally works best from November through April. Islands worth checking out for waves include:

  • Puerto Rico
  • Guadeloupe
  • Dominican Republic
  • Monserrat
  • Barbados
  • Trinidad
  • Tobago
